Firstly, I want to thank you for commenting on my post.I disagree with your opinion that if we do not use oil, BP would not exist. I feel that businesses are everywhere, and if you think that if we do not eat there would not be markets and there will not be so many plastic bags. Don't you feel that it is wrong to think this way? Anyway, I do feel that it is not OUR wrong, and rather it is BP's problem because they did not listen to expert's advise and should spend more care and money on the BOP having known the consequences of a major oil spill, like Exxon Valdez.

I agree with Darrell, as my mother too felt that Singapore did not publicize enough in our own country, and only did so in other countries. I feel that though this will increase the number of tourists and expand our economy, in social affairs it is not doing good, because Singaporeans (Or at least me) will feel that we are not important in our government's eyes or not that respected as foreign people. Thus, I feel that Singapore should do something like a holiday or a special day that a school can go an watch YOG to fill up the empty spaces that Darrell mentioned.

Marcus, I think that your analysis was somewhat good, though it looked like it was copied. If it was really written by you, then good job. Anyway, thank you for this post as it will help me a lot in writing a literature essay in the future.

Yes, I agree with your post.Though I feel that you can elaborate more on why women are still biased now, but it was done well.

I think that Wilfred Owen is a very influential poet, and I like him because of his power in his poem and often the changing mood. I suggest you do an analysis of the poem written by him "The End".

CA- Flood

Today, I was an insurance company spokesperson for today's Current Affairs. I was overall satisfied with my speech, and had fun arguing with other people and debating around. Although I felt that some people did not prepare enough or even read the articles, I was pleased with today, because I had a lot of applause =D

Oil Spill

Nearly 80% of Gulf spill oil still in water: US scientists

I think that actually BP should not even have made this mistake. Given their prices of oil, they should be having higher standards and would check more oftenly if anything is wrong but BP still made the mistake. Now we have to face the consequences of oil in the water for a long time, possibly even forever.

China Mudslide

The massive mudslide happened in Gansu Province, and it caused 1,270 as of 5 p.m. Tuesday, with 474 still missing. I feel very sad for China, because the death toll is still increasing and China declared that it would be a mourning day the previous week. I think that the rest of the world, after seeing this new should help in a way, either donate money or do something good so that China can have better technology and more funds for predicting natural disasters to avoid the massive casualties.

Myanmar Elections

YANGON - MYANMAR'S first election in two decades will be held Nov 7, the junta announced on Friday, setting the wheels in motion for a long-awaited event that critics have dismissed as a sham designed to cement military rule.

The brief announcement was carried on state TV and radio, marking the first time the junta has given a date for the country's first polls since 1990.

'Multiparty general elections for the country's parliament will be held on Sunday Nov 7,' according to the brief announcement from the Election Commission, which also called on political parties to submit their candidate lists between Aug 16 and Aug 30.

Ahead of the polls, the ruling military junta has passed numerous laws and rules criticised by detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and the international community as undemocratic and unfair.

Ms Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy is boycotting the polls. It was disbanded in May because it refused to register.

The new laws effectively bar Ms Suu Kyi and other political prisoners - estimated at more than 2,000 - from taking part in the elections. -- AP

I hope that Myanmar would elect a good and wis government, but I am not insulting the current one. I just wish that Myanmar would get a better government so as to improve their economics and the situation their country is in, if not it is impossible to make any progress.

Oliver Fricker

THE High Court will deliver its judgment in the appeal hearing of convicted Swiss vandal Oliver Fricker against his five-month jail sentence on Wednesday.

The 32-year-old has been in jail for seven weeks since a lower court handed him a three-month and three-stroke sentence for spray painting an MRT train and another two months for entering a protected place at Changi Depot.

The then IT consultant pleaded guilty to the two May offences committed with alleged accomplice, Briton Dane Alexander Lloyd, 29, who is at large.

A third charge of vandalism by cutting the fence of the MRT depot belonging to the Land Transport Authority was taken into consideration.

On Friday, Justice V.K. Rajah allowed the prosecution's application to admit the previous conviction of the Swiss national.

The court heard that Fricker was placed on probation and fined in Switzerland in 2001 for damaging public property but the details of what he did were not known.

I feel that oliver fricker should be badly punished, because he should know the law before committing crimes such as vandalizing, especially on a public train. This action is despicable and it will be too late for him to apologize and appeal now.

YOG torch relay.

The day before, was the day I was so excited and awaited so long for. Though it did not meet my expectations and made me disappointed, I was glad enough to overcome my disappointment. I was glad because it was once in a blue moon to see a torch relay of an event which happens every 4 years, and it was the first Youth Olympic Games, specially held in our country, Singapore.

We waited especially long, about 1 hour, of an unknown reason. The teachers always gave false alarms that they are coming and we have to stand up, but after a while of doing the same things over again, the students were restless and sat down, unable to believe the teachers again. Finally, we were told to stand by the roadside outside our gate, to welcome the runners. I was already perspiring madly, but I stood up and went there, to have a glimpse. It finally came but it did not dawn on me that it would happen so quickly. The runner holding the torch came by, and I suppose the people behind him are athletes. Some of them are from Nanyang Primary. Just like that, the YOG torch passed by me. This was what made me disappointed.

1 hour for 1 glimpse of YOG torch, was it worthwhile? What are your feelings?

Flood

Last few weeks there were a lot of floods, specifically in Bukit Timah, Orchard, and Newton. This is because of the El Nino and a typhoon in China, causing disrupt air pressures. This caused the rainy "season" in Singapore, and also unexpected floods in Orchard Road, causing many losses in the shops in Lucky plaza, and many other shopping malls. One worst case is in Wendy's, a newly opened branch of Wendy's in America.

The reason was- leaves and twigs clogging the drains.

I feel that this reason should not be acceptable, because it is PUB's job to get it clean and regular checking should be efficient enough to check every nook and cranny, if not it will cause in this incident. I also think that PUB should compensate for the losses and explain and apologize to citizens, because it has caused many inconveniences. PUB is a government-supported company, and so it should have much more than just integrity to admit their mistake, but also apologize immediately knowing that it caused such inconveniences. I might be too critical, but this is my point of view.

How about you?

Common Test

Today we did our Emily of Emerald Hill test, and also received our Common Test about Redeployment. I felt that I did quite well for the EEH test, because I wrote a lot of points. I wrote that I agreed that Emily successfully aroused sympathy in the audience, because she was betrayed by her three most important, Her father, her husband and her son. After that, we had our test papers given back to us. I scored 15/25 after moderation, which I was relieved. Ms leong then explained to us what was the common mistake- a lot of us only took the literal meaning as the answer. The worms were flecked with the cat's blood means that the soldiers from each side have "blood on their hands" as they have killed people in the war. Everything in the poem was about the filth and contamination caused by war. That's all folks! Haha....

Task 2 - Rainbow Death

1. Point of View
The Speaker seems to have a negative perspective on the poem, criticizing the Americans in their actions.

Evidence
This could be seen from the negative words the speaker has used to describe the situation, such as "death popourri" and "mourn".

Elaboration
The word"potpourri" is a mixture of dried, naturally fragrant plant material, used to probide a gentle natural scent in houses. However in this case, it is used with the word "death", which is a much more negative term. Hence, I feel that the speaker have an negative perspective on the situation. The word "mourn" is also a negative word which means feeling or expressing grief or sorrow. This definitely gives the entire poem a negative picture.

2. Situation and Setting
In this poem, there is an external conflict as this concerns the whole of America, not just a single person. The fundamental cause of this conflict would most probably be the "agent orange spray". However, the poem provides no resolution to the conflict.

Evidence
This could be seen from "America could not foresee" and also the last sentence of the poem - "Execrable effects of agent orange spray!"

Explanation
The last sentence clearly shows that the effects of the orange spray were execrable, which meant disastrous. Thus, it clearly was the fundamental cause of this conflict as it could cause the death of many people. We could also tell that this conflict concerns the whole of America from the first sentence of the poem, thus making the conflict an external conflict.

3. Language and Diction
I feel that the author was very successful in conveying his meaning across to the readers through his use of language. He has used a lot of imagery in his poem to warn the readers of the deadly effects of "Agent Orange Spray" and that the aftermaths of war might still linger on even though the war has ended.

Explanation
The word "execrable" gives the readers a sense of doom as the effects would be disastrous. Words like "Mourn" gives the readers a sense of gloominess as mourn usually represents expressing one's grives and sadness. The phrase "WILL pay" with the word "will" capitalised gives the entire poem a sense of terror as the author is emphasizing the word "will." By doing so, the author is suggesting that the generations would definitely have to pay a heavy price.

Evidence
He has used words such as "execrable", "mourn", "led astray" and "WILL pay" to give the readers a sense of gloominess.

4. Personal response
From this poem, I have learnt from the poet's intended message that the aftermaths of war is terrible even though a war has just ended. War will harm more than the expected cause and thus war is not good for everyone.

Task 1 - Rainbow death

Analysing of poem

This small poem speaks of a modern day example of warfare that has caused appalling death and suffering – not only to its intended victims, the Vietnamese people, but also the service personnel that used or even just came into contact with “Agent Orange”.
Wikipedia states that Agent Orange is the code name for a herbicide and defoliant—contaminated with TCDD—used by the U.S. military in its Herbicidal Warfare program during the Vietnam War.

From 1962 to 1971, Agent Orange was by far the most widely used of the so-called "Rainbow Herbicides" employed in the herbicidal warfare program. During the production of Agent Orange (as well as Agents Purple, Pink, and Green) dioxins were produced as a contaminant, which have caused numerous health problems for the millions of people who have been exposed. Agents Blue and White were part of the same program but did not contain dioxins.”

According to Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 4.8 million Vietnamese people were exposed to Agent Orange, resulting in 400,000 deaths and disabilities, and 500,000 children born with birth defects, thus causing almost half of the Vietnamese population were either disabled or died.

Rumors persist of still another more toxic color coded herbicide at the end of this deadly rainbow! This poem may constantly remind us that war causes more harm, even if it is over.

Sabbatical Week

I am in F1 School Workshop for Sabbaticals, and it was fun. It was held in the technical workshop in SRC, and we were going to do a race with our own hand-made D-type Racer. The car plane is made of a light wood called balsa, but when the shaped wood was given to us, it was very rough and coarse. We had to sand it with the two pieces of sandpaper that were handed to us and we could paint it ourselves! At first, I regretted coming into this sabbatical as it costed me 100 dollars, and the work were to be done ourselves. After everything, I changed my mindset and found out that the fun part was the making of the plane. I painted only one layer( which meant I did not make any mistake, not like other people with 3 or 4 layers.) Today we had the race, which I think was the whole cost spent on. The race track was 24 or 22 metres long, and is made of heavy metal. It had laser sensor which was very accurate, and also had air canisters for the carbon dioxide which speeded the car across. When all the "GO" lights had went off, you are supposed to press the button as quickly as possible. Thus, all about D-type Racing is not only the structure of the car, but the reaction time too. I was to race George, and because he had two layers of paint, his was quite heavy. My reaction time was 280, and his was 230, which made a big difference in the racing, but due to the weight, mine speeded when it started, and thus I won George, which I am happy for, as mine was ugly due to the little layers of paint.

Jack Neo

As seen on the newspaper, Jack Neo has been found out having an affair with a freelance model less than half his age for two years. It was exposed by the model herself, after she went to Jack Neo's house at Pasir Ris.

Chinese evening daily Lianhe Wanbao said Miss Wendy Chong, 22, was upset that Neo, 50, had apparently lied to her and demanded to see his wife on Friday. Neo met Chong when she got a bit role as a nurse in his movie, Money No Enough 2, two years ago, and has a meatier role as Mark Lee's sister-in-law in his latest film, Being Human, which opened on Thursday, said The New Paper on Sunday.

Mrs Kng, Jack's wife, had already known about the affair and decided to close one eye as long as she still loves him.

What do you think about this affair? I think, in relation to Tiger Woods, and from all the movies I had watched, everyone, as they become richer, will have a bigger desire and will go wild, thus leading to the risk of having an affair.

End Of Term

Whoa, it was so fast. The term has ended. I am very sad, as I do not have good results. I hope to stop my addiction of Internet and can continue studying, so as to get good results. I really regret not doing my best. I hope I can improve a lot and make my parents happy. :( . I have enjoyed my Term 1 but never liked the results of enjoying too much.

EOTA

Today, we had EOTA. It was bowling. Too bad Mrs Chai was not here, it was so fun! I was at Lane 8, I think, with Sze Chuan, Xuan Meng, and Darrell. As I know from last year's chalet, Sze Chuan and Marcus Lau were good in their bowling. Today, as I expected, I saw Sze Chuan get 123 for his first game, which is approximately 12 per a bowl. I got 67, which was not very good. Darrell was very funny as his ball always get into the gutter, and xuan meng always fall down and his ball would bounce( which was quite cool). And as i was thirsty and hungry, I bought some chips and a can of coke. It was fun! Overall, I would want to go again.

Home Learning Reflections

After the Home Learning, I was very tired. I have learned quite a lot of things, and i hop there will be a Home Learning session every term.

E-learning

Whoa, after a long time of tests and lessons, it is finally near march holidays! And to accompany it, there is Home Learning.

Is Maycomb a good place to live in?

Interpersonal

Interviewing my brother

Interviewer:Do you think prejudice is present on the story?

Brother:Yes, it is very obvious.

I: How do you think it affects the life of Maycomb county folks?

B: I think that it involves everyone's lives, in various ways: gossip, mocking, and even in court.

I: How do you think about the discrimination towards blacks ?

B: I think that it is very unfair, as almost everyone dislike blacks, and whites will always win over blacks in a court case, which means even law is corrupted. And only people like Atticus and Ms Maudie are righteous enough to differentiate what is right and wrong.

I: Thank You for your time.
